After an arduous journey seeking asylum and the American dream, some react with anguish and tears, others walk quietly on their final steps to a new destiny. Most heart-wrenching are family separations. Cochas traumatized children desperately grab their fathers shirt, futilely holding on. Take me, not him they will kill him! screamed Monica, a distraught woman from Ecuador as the family was pulled away from her husband. She was violently thrown to the floor as her children wept. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be examined for head injury. The officer was relieved of duties pending investigation, and then reinstated. A woman is led in shackles on the 10th floor where migrants are held. There is a legal injunction requiring ICE to comply with conditions for a limited number of people. Elected officials are denied access. In a tender moment of humanity, a security guard also sheds tears viewing the sorrow of a mother and child, lost in despair. Please help me, please help me. Take me too. she wept as her husband was led away. There is a vast political divide. Some participate in prayer walks and protests, decrying a lack of due process with echoes of Nazi Germany and a slippery slide into fascism. A woman screamed with indignation, We angry. We all angry out here. Others applaud. And daily, detentions continue.

Flights take off over the crash site of American Airlines flight 5342 and an Army Black Hawk helicopter that collided and fell into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport in Arlington VA on January 31, 2025. The figure skating community lost 28 members in the tragedy, including 11 young skaters between the ages of 11 and 16. All 67 passengers and crew were killed. Sean Kay and Angela Yang, both 11, their mothers Julia Kay and Lily Li with coach Sasha Kirsanov perished on that fateful day. A screen played images of them skating and full of life. He is embraced by friends and family at a Celebration of Life ceremony in Ashburn VA. Maxim Naumov broke down in tears at the end of his poignant performance honoring his parents who were killed during the Legacy on Ice tribute in Washington DC. He skated to one of their favorite songs from Russia The City That Is Not There about their hometown of St. Petersburg. Family members have since lobbied Congress for aviation safety reform and some have filed lawsuits against American Airlines, the US Army, and the federal government for criminal negligence.
